TotalBoat TotalBilge is a one-component, extremely durable epoxy coating that protects your bilge against moisture penetration and helps prevent the absorption of oil, fuel, solvents, and sludge into wood and fiberglass. Its fast-drying formula is easy to apply, provides excellent coverage, and dries to a high-gloss finish that makes grimy bilges look like new. Also great for bulkheads and locker areas.

Surface Preparation
IMPORTANT!TotalBoat TotalBilge is commonly applied in areas containing grime, grease, oil, fuel, dirt, or contaminants. Thorough cleaning and preparation are essential for proper adhesion.
Fiberglass
- Allow bare fiberglass to cure 5–7 days before preparation.
- Remove wax or amine blush before sanding.
- Wash with mild soap and warm water.
- Dewax thoroughly with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep.
- Allow surface to dry.
- Sand with 220–320 grit sandpaper.
- Remove sanding residue with a lint-free rag and approved solvent.
- Allow surface to dry completely before applying TotalBoat TotalBilge.
Bare Wood
- Wood must be dry and contaminant-free.
- Ideal moisture content: 6–8% (less than 10% acceptable).
- Sand smooth with 220-grit sandpaper following the grain.
- Vacuum sanding dust.
- Wipe with approved solvent.
- Allow solvent to evaporate fully before applying TotalBoat TotalBilge.
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Only apply to compatible solvent-based paint coatings.
- Remove coatings that are peeling or in poor condition.
- Clean surface thoroughly.
- Sand with 220–320 grit until smooth.
- Remove sanding residue with approved solvent.
- Allow surface to dry completely before painting.
Epoxy Surfaces
- Allow epoxy to cure at least 5–7 days.
- Wash with soap and water to remove amine blush.
- Sand with 220–320 grit.
- Remove sanding residue with approved solvent.
- Allow surface to dry completely before painting.
Metals
- TotalBoat TotalBilge cannot be applied directly to bare metals.
- Prime metal with TotalBoat TotalProtect.
- Allow primer to cure 5–7 days.
- Sand with 220–320 grit.
- Remove sanding residue with approved solvent.
- Allow surface to dry before applying TotalBoat TotalBilge.
Application
VERY IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PAINTING!
- Apply only when environmental conditions are suitable.
- Stir or shake thoroughly before use.
- TotalBoat TotalBilge has limited UV resistance and is not recommended for UV-exposed surfaces.
- Applying thicker than 3 mils wet film thickness will dramatically extend dry times.
- Applying too thin may require additional coats.
- Dry to touch: 1.5 hrs @ 90°F, 3 hrs @ 70°F, 6 hrs @ 50°F.
- Sand between coats using 220–320 grit.
- Minimum recoat time: 8 hrs @ 90°F, 12 hrs @ 70°F, 16 hrs @ 50°F.
- Apply 1–2 coats minimum.
- Custom colors can be achieved by adding 10–15% TotalBoat Wet Edge.
Application Conditions
- Apply between 50–95°F.
- Relative humidity below 90%.
- Avoid rain, dew, fog, and high humidity during application.
Application Methods
Brushing / Rolling
- Thinning usually unnecessary.
- Add 5–10% thinner if required.
- TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100 provides best flow and leveling.
- Below 60°F, use TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101.
- Use high-quality natural bristle solvent-safe brushes.
- Use 1/8" foam or mohair roller covers.
Spraying
- Reduce 10–20% with TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101.
- Use minimum thinner necessary.
- Airless Spray: ~170 bar / 2500 psi, 0.33–0.41 mm tip.
- Pressure Pot: 50–65 psi gun pressure, 8–10 psi pot pressure.
- Siphon Cup: 50–65 psi gun pressure, 1.5–1.8 mm tip.
Yearly Maintenance
- TotalBoat TotalBilge can be cleaned with TotalBoat Boat Soap, bilge cleaners, or mild degreasers.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or heavily dilute and rinse immediately.
- Maintenance coats are not required but may be applied if staining, wear, or scratches appear.
Warning
Rags, steel wool, or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if discarded improperly. Immediately after use, place rags, steel wool, or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
