Personal Safety
Always use proper Personal Protective Equipment when handling, sanding, or applying this product. Refer to the TotalBoat Outdrive AF aerosol paint Safety Data Sheet for more info. Only apply this product with good ventilation.
Surface Preparation
- When using solvent wipes, change out rags, as needed, to ensure that all possible wax has been removed from the substrate. Clean the surface several times in this method to ensure all wax and other contamination has been removed. This must be done thoroughly before sanding the surface, or it will likely lead to delamination of the paint.
- Allow the surface to dry completely between steps.
- Prior to any surface preparation, mask off any areas that are not to be painted with Outdrive AF.
Aluminum
- TotalBoat Outdrive AF aerosol paint can be applied to bare aluminum that has been properly prepared.
- Remove any loose debris or rust with a scraper or stiff brush.
- Sandblast or grind the surface until the entire surface is shiny, bare metal, with a 2-3 mil profile.
- Immediately remove all sanding residue with a vacuum and/or fresh air, and wipe the surface clean with a clean cotton rag dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep. Allow the surface to dry completely.
- For best adhesion to bare aluminum, etch the bare aluminum using TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash within 1 hour of abrading the surface.
- Apply TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat as directed within 1 hour of etching or abrading the surface.
- Follow the application directions below.
Bare Steel or Iron
- TotalBoat Outdrive AF aerosol paint can be applied to bare iron or steel that has been properly prepared.
- Remove any loose debris or rust with a scraper or stiff brush.
- Sandblast or grind the surface until the entire surface is shiny, bare metal, with a 2-3 mil profile.
- Immediately remove all sanding residue with a vacuum and/or fresh air, and wipe the surface clean with a clean, cotton rag dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep and apply TotalBoat TotalProtect epoxy barrier coat as directed.
- Apply Outdrive AF aerosol paint over the TotalProtect as directed below.
Bare Fiberglass or Gelcoat
- All bare fiberglass substrates need to be fully cured for at least 5-7 days prior to any surface preparation.
- The surface must be properly dewaxed, or amine blush must be removed prior to any further surface preparation.
- Wash the surface with warm water and a mild soap. Dry the surface completely.
- Dewax the surface very thoroughly using TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep and clean cotton rags. DO NOT use synthetic rags. Change out rags as needed to ensure that all possible wax has been removed from the substrate. Clean the surface several times in this method to ensure all wax and other contamination have been removed. This must be done thoroughly before sanding the surface, or it will likely lead to delamination of the paint.
- Allow the surface to dry completely.
- Mask off any areas that are not to be painted with Outdrive AF aerosol paint.
- Sand the surface with 80-grit sandpaper to a dull, frosty finish.
- Remove any sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with a clean, lint-free cotton rag dampened with Dewaxer & Surface Prep solvent. Then wipe the surface with a clean, dry cotton rag.
- Allow the surface to dry completely before applying Outdrive AF aerosol paint, as directed below.
Barrier Coat Application
- Applying a barrier coat such as TotalBoat TotalProtect to bare fiberglass before applying paint is very strongly recommended to prevent osmotic blisters.
- Once the bare fiberglass has been prepared to this stage, TotalBoat TotalProtect can be applied as directed on the label, prior to applying Outdrive AF aerosol paint.
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Only apply TotalBoat Outdrive AF aerosol paint to previously painted substrates that are in good, serviceable condition. Only apply Outdrive AF aerosol paint over compatible paints.
- If the previous underwater metal paint is in good condition, sand with 80-grit sandpaper, then wipe the surface clean with clean cotton rags dampened with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 or TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, changing rags frequently as needed, before applying Outdrive AF paint.
- Previous paints in poor condition (flaking, chipping, or peeling) should be completely removed by sanding, scraping, or using a chemical paint stripper. Then, start the surface preparation process based on the appropriate substrate material.
How to Apply Outdrive AF Aerosol Paint Over TotalBoat TotalProtect or TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat
- Outdrive AF aerosol paint can be applied directly to the TotalBoat TotalProtect or Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat, either by using the thumbprint-tacky method, or once the barrier coat has cured fully, and been sanded with 80-grit sandpaper, as specified on the product label.
- The thumbprint-tacky method is preferred, as the paint can create a chemical bond with the curing barrier coat, while also saving time and a few extra steps.
Thumbprint-Tacky Method
- When the final layer of TotalProtect or Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat has cured for 45-60 minutes, touch the recently applied coating with your thumb.
- If it does not stick to your thumb, but you can make a thumbprint, you are within the overcoat window. Apply Outdrive AF aerosol paint.
- If the coating is still sticky (more than just tacky), leaves product on the fingertip, or still feels wet, then wait a little longer.
- If the TotalProtect or Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat is fully cured to a dry state and is firm to the touch, leaving no thumbprint on the surface of the barrier coat, then wait 24 hours from when it was applied and follow the sanding method below.
Sanding Method
- Wait a minimum of 24 hours from when the TotalProtect or Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat was applied and sand the barrier coat with 80-grit sandpaper until the whole surface is uniformly smooth.
- Remove all sanding residue and wipe the surface with clean cotton rags dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, changing out rags as needed, then follow by wiping with dry, clean cotton rags to remove any remaining residue.
- Allow any remaining surface preparation solvent to evaporate completely prior to applying Outdrive AF aerosol paint.
Application Conditions
- Best results are achieved when the substrate, air, and paint temperatures are between 50-90°F, and the relative humidity is less than 90%.
- If at all possible, do not attempt to apply Outdrive AF aerosol paint when the air, substrate, or paint are outside of this range. Dry times may be extremely long or extremely short.
- Do not apply during times of high humidity, when rain, dew, or fog may affect the application or drying of the paint.
Application
SHAKE OUTDRIVE AF AEROSOL PAINT VERY, VERY THOROUGHLY FOR A MINIMUM OF 1 MINUTE AFTER THE MIXING BALL BEGINS TO RATTLE (shaking even longer is recommended) PRIOR TO APPLYING.
- Outdrive AF aerosol paint is a high-solids paint that can settle in the can. If the can is not properly shaken, the paint may sputter or clog the nozzle during application.
Spraying Instructions
- Hold the can 10-12 inches from the surface. Depress the nozzle and spray with smooth, even strokes.
- Shake the can often during application to help prevent clogs in the spray nozzle.
- When finished spraying, clear the spray valve by turning the can upside down and spraying until no paint is seen coming from the nozzle (this usually takes 3-4 seconds).
- For best results and finish, allow a minimum of 3 hours @ 90°F, 6 hours @ 70°F, or 12 hours @ 40°F between coats.
- Apply at least 2 coats. The paint’s effectiveness and longevity are directly dependent on the number of coats applied.
If the Spray Nozzle Clogs During Application
- Clogging can develop if the can was not shaken sufficiently prior to application or if the spray head wasn’t cleaned adequately after the previous use.
- Turn the spray head ¼ turn or remove it and clean the spray head slot.
- DO NOT stick any pins, needles, or sharp objects into the can opening. With the spray can and spray head pointed away from you, reinsert the spray head with a gentle twisting motion.
- Test for proper application. Repeat the cleaning process if necessary.
Wait Times Prior to Launching
-
Prior to launching, allow Outdrive AF aerosol paint to dry for the specified time based upon temperature:
- 8 hours @ 90°F
- 16 hours @ 70°F
- 24 hours @ 50°F
- There is no maximum amount of time that the boat can be launched after painting.
