Application Conditions
- There is no set temperature range for using TotalBoat Pigment Dispersions. Always follow the application conditions on the product that is being pigmented.
Important
- TotalBoat Pigment Dispersions are designed to be added to other adhesives in their liquid form prior to curing them.
- Epoxy-based, polyester resin, and vinyl ester resin-based products are all compatible with Pigment Dispersions. Follow the specific application details below.
- NEVER use Pigment Dispersions as a standalone product. They do not cure or dry on their own.
- Pigment Dispersions can be used with other materials; however, it is extremely important to create a small test sample and cure it completely to see if it achieves the desired results and performance.
- The actual color of TotalBoat Pigment Dispersions may vary slightly from batch to batch.
- Adding these pigments to other products may or may not extend their cure times.
Application
Polyester Resin, Vinyl Ester Resin:
- Add Pigment Dispersions prior to catalyzing.
- The maximum pigment load is 10% by volume, however it is recommended to only use as much Pigment Dispersions as necessary to achieve a desired effect.
- Applying too much Pigment Dispersions may compromise some working properties or the cured material’s performance.
- It is always recommended to perform a test sample. Catalyze and cure the sample completely to observe the color it will be.
Gelcoat (Polyester or vinyl ester resin-based):
- Add Pigment Dispersions prior to catalyzing.
- The maximum pigment depends on if the gelcoat was pre-tinted.
- Neutral and clear gelcoat can be tinted with a higher pigment percentage than pre-tinted gelcoat.
- Pre-tinted gelcoat: (such as white, gray, black, or blue) should only be pigmented with about 1% Pigment Dispersions by volume
- Neutral or clear gelcoat: Can be tinted up to 10% for most colors (up to 12% when using red, yellow, or orange Pigment Dispersions)
- Applying too much Pigment Dispersions may compromise some working properties or the cured material’s performance.
- It is always recommended to perform a test sample. Catalyze, completely cure, wet sand and buff the sample to observe the actual color it will be.
Epoxy-Based Products:
- Pigment Dispersions should only be added to epoxy-based products AFTER the resin and hardener components have been mixed together.
- Some epoxy-based products specify an induction period after mixing the two components. If this applies, wait until the induction period has finished before adding Pigment Dispersions.
- The maximum pigment load should be 1-2% Pigment Dispersions by volume.
- Pigment Dispersions can be used in collaboration with other pigment types such as mica pigments to achieve a wider variety of effects.
- It is always recommended to perform a test sample. Cure the sample completely to observe the color it will be.
Using Pigment Dispersions with Other Products:
- Pigment Dispersions are designed as a universal pigment type, and are not limited to use with just epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester resin-based products.
- It is strongly advised to perform a test sample when adding Pigment Dispersions to any other coatings, adhesives, or glues to ensure it achieves the desired results. Cure the sample completely to see if it performs as desired.
Product Storage
- Store tightly sealed with the cap secured tightly in a cool, dry place under 77°F. Avoid contamination with moisture, dust, or any other substances.
- The shelf life is a minimum of 1 year under proper storage.
