Legacy builds a durable protective finish, enhancing the grain more with each coat. Its repairable formula allows for quick spot fixes and cleaning up wear and tear. Danger

Rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other wastes used or soaked with Legacy may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. No ignition source is required for these wastes to start on fire by themselves. Immediately place rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other wastes used or soaked with this product in a sealed water-filled metal container. Dispose of in accordance with local fire regulations.

Surface Preparation

Bare Wood

• Wood should be in good condition, dry, and free of any dust, grease, oils, tar, wax, water, or other potential contaminants prior to sanding.
• The ideal wood moisture content to apply Legacy is 6-8% or lower, but less than 10% usually yields good results. Applying a gel polyurethane to wood with a higher moisture content is not recommended.
  • Blistering or delamination from the wood may occur if the moisture content is too high.
• Sand the wood in the direction of the grain with 220-grit sandpaper until it is even and smooth.
• Vacuum away any sanding dust.
• Wipe the surface clean using a clean, lint-free cotton rag dampened with one of the specified cleaner/surface preparation solvents.
• Allow the solvent to dry completely before applying Legacy.

Previously Coated Surfaces

• Previously coated surfaces in poor condition should be stripped back to the bare substrates. Only apply Legacy to coated substrates in good, sound condition that do not show signs of delamination, cracking, or peeling.
• WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before starting, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
• If the old coating is in good condition, sand the surface in the direction of the grain with 320-grit sandpaper until it is smooth.
• Remove any sanding residue by wiping the surface clean using a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with one of the specified cleaner/surface preparation solvents.
• Allow the surface preparation solvent to dry completely before applying Legacy.

Teak

• Bare teak wood in good condition has a warm, golden tone.
• Teak that has been over-exposed to the elements may take on a gray appearance.
• If the teak wood has a gray appearance, it should be cleaned with TotalBoat Teak Cleaner to restore it to its original warm, golden color. Use Part A and Part B as specified on the instructions and allow a minimum of 48 hours dry time prior to applying Legacy. Always ensure that the moisture content is within the acceptable range before application.
• Once the teak wood has been cleaned and thoroughly dried, follow the surface preparation instructions for bare wood.

Epoxy Surfaces

• Epoxy substrates need to be fully cured for a minimum of 5-7 days under normal curing conditions prior to any surface preparation or application of Legacy.
• Once cured, the epoxy must be washed with a mild soap and warm water, then rinsed well to remove any possible amine blush, whether noticeable or not. This must be performed even if the epoxy is classified as non-blushing or does not appear to have an amine blush on the surface.
• Dry the surface completely.
• Sand the surface with 320-grit sandpaper. A dual action sander can help leave the most uniform sanded surface.
• Remove any sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with one of the specified cleaner/surface preparation solvents.
• Allow any surface preparation solvents to evaporate completely prior to applying Legacy.

Application Conditions

• Apply Legacy when the substrate, air, and gel polyurethane’s temperatures are between 60-85°F and the relative humidity is less than 70%.
• The optimal conditions are 70°F and 50% relative humidity.
• Avoid applying Legacy in direct sunlight, breezy conditions, or times of high humidity when dew, fog, or precipitation may affect the drying or cured finish.

Application

• Stir Legacy thoroughly before application to ensure a consistent finish.
• Only apply Legacy with a clean, soft, lint-free cotton rag.
• Apply a thorough coat to the desired surface, working on one side of the project at a time.
• After Legacy has been adequately spread out on that side, use a new, clean, lint-free cotton rag and work it into the grain in the direction of the grain, while removing any excess material.
• Then, using a new clean rag, buff quickly with light pressure to achieve the Legacy finish.
• Follow this process on the rest of the piece.
• IMPORTANT TIP: Close the lid immediately after applying to prevent Legacy from drying and forming a skin in the can.
• Legacy is dry to the touch in as little as 5 hours.
• Wait a minimum of 6 hours before reapplying. Legacy must be completely tack-free to be reapplied.
• A minimum of 2 coats is recommended. More coats will offer a much richer finish.
• Sanding is not required between coats but may be desired if the wood grain stands up in spots, or to fix an area.
  • Always wait 24 hours before sanding. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain with 320- or 400-grit sandpaper.
  • Wipe away sanding residue with a clean cotton rag. Avoid using solvents to remove sanding residue before applying the next coat.
• Allow at least 24 hours to cure before use.

Coating Maintenance

• For a light cleaning or dust removal, simply wipe with a dry, clean microfiber cloth.
• For a deeper cleaning or removing smudges, gently wipe the surface with a damp rag and mild soap. Wipe the surface dry immediately after to avoid water stains or streaking.
• Mask off the area that is to be repaired.
• Sand the masked area with 220-grit sandpaper to remove any damaged Legacy finish.
• Apply 1-2 coats of Legacy to the repair area.
• Remove the masking materials and lightly sand to blend in the repair with 320- to 400-grit sandpaper.
• Apply another coat to the entire section to blend the repair in with the rest of the piece.
