Product Information
Cleaner / Surface Preparation
Use denatured alcohol or acetone only on compatible substrates.
Cleanup
- Part A — Epoxy Resin: Denatured alcohol or acetone
- Part B — Hardener: Denatured alcohol
- Mixed (uncured): Scrape and clean using denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, or acetone
- Cured: Remove mechanically
Thinner / Reducer
Do not thin this product.
Colorants / Tints
Use epoxy-compatible colorants such as mica powders, pigment dispersions, or alcohol inks. Always test a small sample with Artist Resin to confirm the desired effect.
Mold Release Agents
Use mold release paste wax or epoxy-appropriate aerosol release agent to preserve molds and extend their lifespan.
Coverage (1-Gallon Kit)
- Seal Coat: ~24 sq. ft. per gallon kit
- Flood Coat @ 1/4": ~6.4 sq. ft. per gallon kit
- ~6.5 sq. in. per 1 oz mixed epoxy @ 1/4" thickness
- Actual coverage depends on surface area, porosity, and application technique.
Safety & PPE
Always wear gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. Follow the Safety Data Sheet for each component.
Exothermic Reaction Warning: Mixed epoxy can reach 200–300°F if left in a mixing cup beyond its working time.
Surface Preparation
- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, and contaminants.
- Do not use tack cloths or paper towels.
- Wipe with a lint-free cotton rag dampened with denatured alcohol.
Wood & Other Porous Substrates (Seal Coat Required)
- Apply a thin seal coat of mixed epoxy to clean, dry surfaces.
- Allow the seal coat to cure hard and sand smooth with 80–120 grit sandpaper.
- Wipe clean with denatured alcohol.
- The seal coat creates an air-tight barrier to prevent off-gassing bubbles during the flood coat.
Application Conditions
- Maintain 65–75°F and <60% RH during application and cure.
- Below 65°F, epoxy thickens and traps air bubbles.
- Above 75°F, epoxy may cure too quickly, risking yellowing or cracking.
- Ideal ambient temperature: ~70°F.
Dispensing & Mixing
- Mix Ratio (by volume): 1A:1B
- Mix Ratio (by weight): 1.11A:1B
- Mix 3–5 minutes, scraping sides and bottom until uniform.
- Transfer to a clean cup; mix 2–3 additional minutes.
- Stir slowly to minimize air bubbles; allow 1–2 minutes for degassing before pouring.
- Do not mix more than 1 gallon at once; use smaller batches for better control.
Application
Coating Applications
- Do not pour thicker than 1/4" per coat.
- For thicker builds, pour multiple 1/4" layers at least 4 hours apart. Sanding is not required between layers.
Small Castings
- Maximum pour depth: up to 2" for small castings, up to 10 fl. oz. mixed epoxy per pour.
- For larger amounts, pour in multiple 1/4" layers with at least 4 hours between pours.
- Tip: A pressure pot at approximately 50 psi can help remove trapped air bubbles during casting.
Working Time
- Pot life: ~10 minutes @ 70°F
- Total working time: ~30 minutes @ 70°F
- Pour immediately after mixing for best self-leveling performance.
Removing Bubbles
- Allow the epoxy to sit for ~10 minutes after pouring to let bubbles rise.
- Use a heat gun or propane torch 6–8" above the surface, moving continuously.
- Avoid overheating or lingering on one spot.
Cure & Finish
- Coatings @ 1/4" and 70°F: Tack-free 6–8 hrs; sandable ~24 hrs; light use ~48 hrs; full cure 3–5 days.
- Castings: Demold after ≥24 hrs; support 3–5 days to prevent sagging.
- Artist Resin cures to a glossy finish and can be wet sanded and buffed after 5–7 days.
- For outdoor UV protection, apply a clear urethane or varnish topcoat.
Troubleshooting
Bubbles
Work within 65–75°F, use a seal coat on wood, and avoid overmixing. Place castings in a pressure pot to minimize trapped air.
Fisheyes
Fisheyes are caused by surface contamination. Small fisheyes can be filled with TotalBoat TotalBond or TotalBoat UV Cure Clear Resin. Ensure repairs are fully cured and sanded before recoating.
Incomplete Cure
Ensure correct 1:1 ratio and thorough mixing. A two-cup method is recommended. Maintain ≥65°F during cure. Do not scrape uncured residue from the mix cup onto your surface.
Crystallization
If resin appears cloudy or solidified, warm the sealed container in a 125–140°F water bath until clear. Allow to cool before use.
Product Storage & Shelf Life
- Store 60–90°F, dry, tightly sealed, away from moisture or contaminants.
- Do not allow freezing; maintain consistent storage temperatures.
- Shelf life: Minimum 1 year, typically longer if stored properly.
