Surface Preparation
Bare Aluminum
- Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of contaminants such as oil, grease, or wax.
- Sand with 220-grit sandpaper until uniform and shiny, then wipe with denatured alcohol.
- Apply paint within 1 hour of surface preparation if possible.
- Recommendation: After sanding, apply TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash as directed. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry completely before painting.
- For maximum corrosion resistance, apply TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat as a primer and allow to cure for at least 48 hours before sanding lightly and applying paint.
Galvanized Metals
- Clean thoroughly to remove contaminants.
- Remove oxidation spots with a wire brush.
- Apply TotalBoat Rust Primer as directed, allow to dry, then apply TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint.
Previously Painted Aluminum
- Apply only over coatings in good condition; remove poor coatings.
- Clean, sand with 220-grit, and wipe with denatured alcohol before painting.
Fiberglass
- Allow fiberglass to cure 5–7 days before painting.
- Dewax with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep before sanding.
- Sand with 220-grit and wipe clean with denatured alcohol.
Epoxy Surfaces
- Allow epoxy to cure 5–7 days before prep.
- Wash with mild soap and water to remove amine blush, sand with 220-grit, and clean with alcohol.
Bare Wood
- Ensure wood is dry (moisture under 10%) and free from contaminants.
- Sand with 220-grit in the grain direction, vacuum dust, then wipe with denatured alcohol or acetone.
- Allow to dry completely before applying TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint.
Application Methods
Brushing / Rolling
- Thinning is not usually required. Only thin if necessary with water.
- Do not over-thin; this may cause drips or extended dry times.
- Use high-quality nylon or poly-tapered bristle brushes.
- Avoid natural bristle brushes; foam brushes are not recommended.
- Use 1/8"–3/16" foam or mohair rollers designed for lint-free finishes.
- The roll-and-tip method works best: roll vertically, then lightly tip horizontally with a brush.
Spraying
- Use only clean water as thinner, and only the minimum amount necessary.
- Airless Spray: 170 bar / 2500 psi, 0.33–0.41 mm tip
- Pressure Pot: 50–65 psi (gun), 8–10 psi (pot), 0.89–1.4 mm tip
- Siphon Cup: 50–65 psi, 1.5–1.8 mm tip
Application Conditions
- Apply between 50–90°F with humidity below 90%.
- Avoid direct sunlight, dew, or fog during drying.
Application
- Stir or shake thoroughly before use.
- Strain through a medium mesh paint strainer.
- Apply 2–3 coats at 6–8 mils wet without dripping or sagging.
- Recoat once tack-free within 12 hours. After 12 hours, sanding is required before recoating.
- Wait at least 12 hours before sanding with 320-grit.
- Only use water for cleaning surfaces within 48 hours of painting, not solvents.
- Allow 48 hours to cure for light use/intermittent submersion, and 5–7 days for full cure before heavy use.
Maintenance
- Clean with TotalBoat Boat Soap and water.
- Annual coats are not required but may be desirable for wear or fading.
- Do not polish or wax the finish.
Paint Repairs
- Mask off damaged areas before repairs.
- For light scuffs, sand with 220-grit, wipe with denatured alcohol, and apply 1–2 coats.
- For heavier damage, sand or scrape affected paint, prep the surface, and apply 2–3 new coats.
