Surface Preparation
Fiberglass
- Allow bare fiberglass to cure at least 5–7 days before prep or painting.
- Wash with warm water and mild soap; dry completely.
- Dewax thoroughly using TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep and clean cotton rags. Replace rags frequently.
- Sand with 220–320 grit; clean again with a listed prep solvent and dry before painting.
Bare Wood
- Ensure wood is dry (ideal moisture 6–8%) and clean of contaminants.
- Sand with 220-grit in the direction of the grain.
- Wipe with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 before painting.
- Prime with TotalBoat Topside Primer; cure, sand lightly, and clean before applying TotalBoat Wet Edge.
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Apply only over compatible solvent-based paints in good condition.
- Strip failing coatings to bare substrate.
- Wash with soap and water, dry, and wipe with a listed prep solvent.
- Sand with 220–320 grit, clean, and dry before painting.
Epoxy Surfaces
- Allow epoxy to cure 5–7 days before prep or painting.
- Wash with warm water and mild soap to remove amine blush; rinse and dry.
- Sand with 220–320 grit and wipe clean with a listed prep solvent before painting.
Metals
- Do not apply TotalBoat Wet Edge directly to bare metal.
- Prime with TotalBoat TotalProtect or TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat.
- Allow primer to cure 5–7 days, sand with 220–320 grit, and clean before painting.
Application Conditions
- Apply when substrate, air, and paint are 50–90°F and RH < 85–90%.
- Avoid direct sunlight, high humidity, rain, dew, or fog during drying.
Application
- Stir or shake thoroughly before use, ensuring even mixing of any flattening agents.
- Do not exceed approximately 3 mils wet film thickness; thicker films extend dry time and can trap solvent.
- Sand between coats with 220–320 grit only when the paint powders easily; do not sand too early.
- Remove all sanding residue and wipe with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 before recoating.
- Minimum recoat window: 8 hrs @ 90°F, 12 hrs @ 70°F, 16 hrs @ 50°F.
- Apply 2–3 coats for full color and protection; additional coats enhance gloss and UV resistance.
- TotalBoat Wet Edge colors can be blended for custom shades. Non-skid media can also be added if desired.
Application Methods
Brushing / Rolling
- Use TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 for best flow and leveling.
- Below 60°F, TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 can help improve tack-free time.
- Thin 5–10% as needed; avoid over-thinning to maintain gloss and avoid drips or sags.
- Use high-quality, solvent-safe natural bristle brushes and 1/8" foam or mohair rollers.
- The “roll and tip” method is recommended for smooth, even finishes.
Spraying
- Reduce 10–20% with TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101; use the minimum needed for desired flow and gloss.
- Airless: ~170 bar / 2500 psi; 0.33–0.41 mm tip
- Pressure Pot: 50–65 psi (gun), 8–10 psi (pot), 0.89–1.4 mm tip
- Siphon Cup: 50–65 psi, 1.5–1.8 mm tip
Maintenance
- Clean with mild boat soap such as TotalBoat Boat Soap and water.
- Annual coats are not required; apply a maintenance coat as needed for wear or UV fading.
