Before applying TotalBoat epoxy products, it's important to start by making sure the surface is free of any contaminants that can ccompromise the epoxy's ability to bond to the surface.
To remove contaminants such as wax, grease, dirt and dust, always use acetone to dampen a clean, lint-free cotton rag, wipe the surface, and allow the solvent to evaporate completely. Do not use oily solvents, paint thinner, mineral spirits, or tack rags. Though not recommended for general surface prep, you can use acetone as a solvent wipe on white oak or oily hardwoods. After solvent wiping, scuff -sand lightly, remove sanding residue, and wait for the solvent to evaporate completely before applying epoxy.
Note that if you're apply epoxy to surfaces other than wood, you can apply epoxy as soon as the surface has been prepped. If you're applying epoxy to wood or another porous surface, we recommend sealing the wood first. Always warm the wood to 80 to 90°F, then apply a thin seal coat of mixed epoxy (resin and hardener combined).
