This will work with any epoxy that specifies a mix ratio by weight. Mixing by weight is always the most accurate way to dispense and mix epoxy if it is done accurately. Do not use the mix ratio by volume for this method of measuring and mixing because the densities of the two components are usually not the same.
- When looking at the mix ratio, the first component listed is the Resin, or Part A component, while the second component listed is the Hardener, or Part B. (Example: 100:45 by weight is 100 parts resin to 45 parts hardener) This ratio is not specific to grams, ounces, or pounds; it works with any units.
- For this explanation, the Resin side of the ratio will be referred to as R, and the Hardener side of the ratio will be H. The total amount of epoxy desired will be referred to as X in this article. To begin, we also need the sum of R and H added together, which will be referred to as Y (R + H = Y).
- If you want to make X units of epoxy by weight, you divide X by Y. Then you multiply the quotient of X and Y by R to get the number of units of Resin, and multiply the quotient of X and Y by H to get the number of units of Hardener.
X = Total Units of Epoxy Desired to Mix (can be grams, ounces, pounds, Kilograms, etc)
Y = Sum of Resin and Hardener ratio when added together (R + H = Y)
RESIN AMOUNT = (X ÷ Y) x R
HARDENER AMOUNT = (X ÷ Y) x H
Example 1: If you want to make 5 ounces of TotalBoat High Performance epoxy with Slow Hardener the mix ratio by weight is 100A:45B. To find Y, you add 100 + 45 = 145 . Begin by dividing the total of 5 ounces by 145 = .034482. To get the total amount for the Resin side, you multiply that by 100 which is 3.448 ounces, and to get the total of the Hardener component you multiply that by 45 which is 1.5517 ounces.
Ratio: 100A:45B
Y = 100 + 45 = 145
R = (5 ÷ 145) x 100 or (.034482) x 100 = 3.4482 ounces
H = (5 ÷ 145) x 45 or (.034482) x 45 = 1.5517 ounces
3.4482 ounces of Resin + 1.5517 ounces of Hardener = 5 OUNCES TOTAL
Example 2: If you want to make 275 grams of TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy with the Fast Hardener the ratio is 100A:18B. To find Y, you add 100 + 18 = 118. Begin by dividing the total of 275g by 118 = 2.3305. To get the total amount for the Resin side, you multiply that by 100 which is 233.05g. To get the Hardener side by 18 which is 49.95g.
Ratio: 100A:18B
Y = 100 + 18 = 118
R = (5 ÷ 118) x 100 or (.2.3305) x 100 = 233.05g
H = (5 ÷ 118) x 18 or (.2.3305) x 45 = 49.95g
233.05g of Resin + 49.95g of Hardener = 275g TOTAL
