This is a great question because the surface of Formica® is shiny, hard and built to keep anything from sticking to it. You can apply epoxy to Formica as long as you prepare the surface properly. First, clean the surface to remove all contaminants, including dust, dirt, oil, wax, and grease. Be sure the cleaner you use doesn't leave a film on the surface.
Next, sand the surface - the more coarse you can make the surface the better in order for the epoxy to form a strong mechanical bond with the Formica. Wipe away any sanding residue and clean the surface again using a clean, lint-free rag dampened with either isopropyl alcohol (high percentage of alcohol) or denatured alcohol. Let the surface dry completely before applying your epoxy product.
