The term 'BPA-free' is usually most relevant for finished projects that might possibly come into contact with food, such as serving boards, counter tops, table tops, and other food-contact surfaces that are designed to hold food (so perhaps not a cutting board).
BPA resins have been used to line canned goods to prevent spoilage, to line water pipes, and for many other uses for several years. There's been some concern as to whether bodily intake is harmful. The FDA says BPA is actually safe at typical exposure levels.
