Acetone can only be used on bare wood if it is used as part of the surface preparation for TotalBoat Gleam Marine Spar Varnish. Ensure that it has evaporated completely before applying Gleam. Do not use acetone in contact with Gleam, as it may prevent it from curing properly or permanently damage it.

TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100 is the recommended surface preparation between coats. Denatured alcohol can also be used, but it should not come into contact with Gleam before the varnish is fully cured. If denatured alcohol comes into contact with uncured Gleam, it may prevent a proper cure.
