Surface Preparation
- All substrates should be completely cleaned and free of any dirt, dust, grease, oil, water, wax, or any other substances.
- Completely remove all previous coatings — Signature Wood Stain should only be applied to wood, or other porous surfaces that are not sealed or coated with any other materials.
- Sand wood substrates in the direction of the grain using 220- or 320-grit sandpaper.
- Remove all sanding residue.
- Wipe the surface clean with either a dry, clean, lint-free cotton rag or a rag lightly dampened with denatured alcohol.
- If wiped with alcohol, allow the surface to dry completely for at least 10-15 minutes before applying Signature Wood Stain.
Note: It is not recommended to apply Signature Wood Stain to non-porous substrates because the stain does not bond to the substrate, meaning that when a topcoat is applied, the stain will likely wipe away or smear. Always perform a test before applying to a non-porous substrate to see if it achieves the desired result.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Application Conditions
- The ideal conditions for applying Signature Wood Stain is 70-80°F, less than 50% relative humidity, and good ventilation with some air movement.
- Signature Wood Stain can be applied at as low as to 50°F, however, the overcoat time may be dramatically longer.
- Application at over 80°F may lead to much faster dry times, which may lead to uneven staining.
Application
- Thoroughly shake or stir this product before use to ensure a consistent finish throughout the project.
- Do not thin Signature Wood Stain, regardless of application method.
- Custom colors can be achieved by blending different colors of Signature Wood Stain.
- For most applications, 1 coat will provide sufficient depth and richness. When desired, a second coat can be applied once the previous coat has dried completely.
- All colors of Signature Wood Stain can be blended with the Natural finish Signature Wood Stain to reduce the intensity of their color.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT mix Signature Wood Stain into any varnish, wood finish, or epoxy products.
- Apply a thin, even coat across the entire surface, working in the direction of the grain to ensure the most consistent finish.
- Use a clean cotton rag to wipe off any remaining stain that hasn’t absorbed within 1-2 minutes of being applied. Wipe in the direction of the grain.
- Do not allow the excess stain to become tacky or dry.
Application Methods
- Apply by brush, rag, or spray.
- When applying by brush, use a natural or China bristle brush for best results.
Topcoating Signature Wood Stain
- TotalBoat Signature Wood Stain is not designed as a finish material. It should always be overcoated with a compatible topcoat.
- Varnishes, polyurethanes, solvent- or water-based clear coat products, epoxy coatings, or lacquers can be applied directly to completely dried Signature Wood Stain.
- Do not sand the stained wood before applying topcoats. Apply the desired topcoat directly to the Signature Wood Stain.
- Allow Signature Wood Stain to dry for 30-45 minutes before applying solvent-based coatings, or a minimum of 24 hours of dry time before applying water-based or epoxy-based coatings.
Product Storage
- Store with the lid secured on tightly and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
- Store locked up, away from heat, sparks, heat sources, or other sources of ignition. Do not store near combustible items.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Shelf Life
Under proper storage conditions, the shelf life of Signature Wood Stain is a minimum of 1 year. Under most circumstances, with proper product storage this product should perform as specified for much longer.
