Yes, TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound can be used to fill small gelcoat cracks above the waterline after following the steps below.
- Completely clean, degrease, and dewax the area to be repaired. Do not use any oily or slow-evaporating solvents during surface preparation. Use acetone only.
- Grind out the area to provide sufficient tooth for new gelcoat to adhere to.
- Coarsely sand or grind out spider cracks and other chips with a rotary tool or angle grinder to form a V-shaped profile.
- When grinding or sanding out any repair area, maintain a width-to-depth ratio of 2:1 or greater to ensure a proper bonding area and allow the substrate to flex as needed at the repair point.
- Sand or grind only as deep as necessary to perform the repair. Do not abrade deeper than necessary. Use acetone and a clean, lint-free cotton rag for the surface preparation solvent wipe. Do not use other solvents or synthetic rags.
