TotalBoat Halcyon water-based marine varnish is suitable for application over oil-based stains once they have fully dried. Oil-based stains typically contain a resin that cures to a tack-free state.
Prior to applying the stain on your final project, it is highly recommended to conduct a compatibility test by applying both the stain and varnish on a small sample piece of wood.
For testing adhesion, follow these steps:
- Apply stain and allow it to cure on a sample piece.
- Apply Halcyon varnish as directed, with multiple coats, and let it cure for 48 hours.
- Conduct an adhesion test by creating a cross-hatch pattern with a razor blade on the varnished area.
- Press a piece of duct tape firmly onto the cross-hatched area, wait a minute, then remove it.
- If the tape does not remove any varnish, it indicates compatibility, allowing Halcyon to be safely used over the stain.
