When you apply the first coat of TotalBoat Halcyon varnish to wood, the water in the varnish can sometimes cause the wood grain to expand slightly and appear raised. To reduce the chance of the grain being raised, you can use a fine grit sandpaper before applying Halcyon. Also, note that applying additional coats will bury the raised grain in the finish, resulting in a smooth, beautiful surface.
